<image:title>JOURNAL - Indiana Lampoon: Clifford Berryman’s Political Parodies of Hoosier Statesmen</image:title>
<image:caption>Untitled (1927). Record note from National Archives: Scandals in Indiana involving the state Republican administration and the state Republican Party, created an opportunity for the Democrats to win in 1928. However, Indiana Democrats had been torn over their choice for Democratic Party Presidential candidate in that election. Many party leaders thought their chances of winning would be greater if neither William Gibbs McAdoo nor Alfred E. Smith were the candidate. Both men were considered too liberal for the conservative Indiana voters. Cartoonist Clifford Berryman sums up the problem by showing Indiana Senator and party boss, Tom Taggart, attempting to inject the tired Indiana Democratic donkey with a dose of Hoosier political scandals. But even he is concerned that "Alas! There was a time when this would put life into it."</image:caption>

<image:title>JOURNAL - Indiana Lampoon: Clifford Berryman’s Political Parodies of Hoosier Statesmen - Untitled (1905)</image:title>
<image:caption>Record note from the National Archives: Charles W. Fairbanks of Indiana was a successful politician. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1896 and served until 1905 when he resigned after being elected Vice President as the running mate for Theodore Roosevelt. He was an unsuccessful Vice Presidential candidate in 1916, running on the Republican ticket with Charles Evans Hughes. In this cartoon by Clifford Berryman, Fairbanks enjoys a brief moment in the spotlight, puffed up with the attention and perhaps misguidedly thinking the Vice Presidency was more important than reality showed it to be after just three months in office.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Record note from the National Archives: President Theodore Roosevelt and his running mate, Indiana Senator Charles W. Fairbanks overwhelmed their Democratic opponents in the 1904 Presidential election. Roosevelt had become President after the assignation of President McKinley in September 1901, and he was a strong character and powerful vote-getter. Cartoonist Clifford Berryman shows Roosevelt and Fairbanks in top hats and formal wear, high stepping in a victory parade along with Berryman's familiar teddy bear who high steps on short stilts and carries a flag emblazoned, "Four Years More of Theodore!"</image:caption>

<image:title>JOURNAL - Indiana Lampoon: Clifford Berryman’s Political Parodies of Hoosier Statesmen - "As a Final Resort" (1904)</image:title>
<image:caption>Record note from the National Archives: The Republicans' clear choice for their Presidential nominee in 1904 was President Theodore Roosevelt, but there was no front-runner for the Vice Presidential spot. This cartoon playfully suggests that the Republicans might have to use a lottery system to choose their candidate. Blindfolded potential nominees are shown hoping to draw the single black bean--representing the Vice Presidency--from the bowl. In the end, Charles Fairbanks of Indiana, the tall candidate in the front row, won the nomination by vote at the convention and joined Roosevelt on the ticket. In November the Roosevelt-Fairbanks ticket scored an impressive victory over the Democratic ticket of Alton B. Parker and Henry W. Davis.</image:caption>

<image:title>JOURNAL - Indiana Lampoon: Clifford Berryman’s Political Parodies of Hoosier Statesmen</image:title>
<image:caption>Untitled (1939). Record description from the National Archives: President Franklin Roosevelt was cautious about announcing his intentions about running for a third term in 1940, implying that he might consider another term if a major crisis erupted in Europe. Several Democrats thought they had White House support for the 1940 Democratic Party nomination. One such person was Paul V. McNutt, former governor of Indiana and high commissioner of the Philippines, who had been appointed recently to head the new Federal Security Agency. Cartoonist Clifford Berryman's "Presidential bee" buzzes about McNutt's head as McNutt sits by a fishing hole, waiting for a bite on his "McNutt boom" bait. Little support developed and his boomlet fizzled quickly.</image:caption>

<image:title>JOURNAL - Indiana Lampoon: Clifford Berryman’s Political Parodies of Hoosier Statesmen - Untitled (1934)</image:title>
<image:caption>Record description from the National Archives: Sitting beside their tent, three former Republican senators and party leaders (Reed Smoot of Utah, George Moses of New Hampshire, and James Watson of Indiana) are convinced that President Franklin Roosevelt did not have them in mind when he asked if the country is better or worse off than March, 4, 1933, inauguration day. All three had been defeated in the 1932 election as Roosevelt carried Democrats to victory. Moses had been president pro tempore of the Senate; Smoot had served thirty years in the Senate; and Watson had been Senate majority leader for four years.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Record description from National Archives: Senator Ralston of Indiana was the former governor of Indiana. He was mentioned as a possible candidate for the Democratic nomination for President. Cartoonist Clifford Berryman's "Presidential bee" buzzes around Ralston's head as he eyes the bee with fly swatter in hand. On his desk is a statement "Honest to goodness; I've never aspired to the Presidency." Ralston received a few votes at the convention in 1924 and later died in 1925.</image:caption>
